Check out some great Midwest-related stories I found online this past month:
Nebraska at 150: Museum of Nebraska Major League Baseball-Getting ready for some Major League baseball action? Learn a little about its storied past at the Museum of Nebraska Major League Baseball museum. You'll learn about Grover Cleveland Alexander, who grew up playing the then-new game of baseball and notched 373 major league wins and is still tied for the all-time best record in the National League. Grover? Baseball? Who knew? Check out Tim's story at The Walking Tourists blog.
Nebraska at 150: Kearney Classic Car Collection-Tim and Lisa check out the classic cars at this great museum in central Nebraska. They share lots of great info about the cars and images here at this story at The Walking Tourists blog.
8 Places to Enjoy the Outdoors in Dubuque, Iowa-It's getting sunnier and drier (most) of these days, and that means it's getting time to enjoy getting outdoors and enjoying this great weather! Hiking, camping, exploring and relaxing in Iowa are just a few of the suggestions Kylie has for readers of her blog Between England and Iowa!
Hikes and Waterfalls at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio-Thinking all of the National Park action is out in the western states? Think again! This park near Cleveland is within easy reach for us here in Detroit, so we've been here several times ourselves Erie and Ohio Canal: Be sure to check out these stories! A short history and visiting Lock 29 along the CVNP Towpath Trail, A pleasant Peninsula in Ohio, Is Ohio's Everett Road Covered Bridge haunted? Check out Mel's story about the national treasure at the A Little Time and a Keyboard blog.
7 Family-Friendly spots in and Around Hocking Hills, Ohio-Kristen takes readers of her creatively named blog, My Kids Eat Squid, shares some of her culinary adventures in the Hocking Hills area with readers of Wandering Educators. We've been to the area ourselves and have enjoyed some of the places mentioned here like the Inn at Cedar Falls and the Millstone BBQ, but Kristen's story gives me a few more places to consider trying next time I head down this way! Read about one of our vintage stories about a return to the Inn at Cedar Falls.
12 Amazing Family Attractions in Downtown Detroit-It's been nice to see Detroit getting more online love in recent years. Richard's post is a nice round up of Detroit attractions, including a few of our favorites like the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, the Detroit Historical Museum and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Check it out at the Wagon Pilot blog.
Five of Michigan's Great Independent Bookstores-Great indie bookstores seem to be more and more difficult to find, but Jeff managed to ferret out five great indies from around the state, including a couple of newer ones that I've yet to visit myself. Check out his story at the Lifelong Michigander blog.
Maumee Valley Chocolate and Candy in Ohio-I'm surprised Tim and I missed this place during our frequent visits to the Toledo area! Fortunately, Mel found and checked out this chocolate-lovers stop...so it goes on the list for when we're able to get back down towards Toledo and Maumee. Check it out on the A Little Time and a Keyboard blog.
Five Must-Camp Places in Michigan This Summer-I'll be the first to admit that I've never been much of a camper, although I do remember some camping trips I took as a kid. Fortunately Shalee loves taking her tent and visiting some of the more remote and quiet places around Michigan. Check out a few of her favorite getaways at the Shalee Wanders blog. We did Les Cheneaux Islands at a B & B, so I do hope Shalee makes that trip soon...It's a beautiful and quiet place in the eastern .U.P., and I'm sure she'll have a great story to post when she does visit!
Following the Amish County Heritage Driving Tour-Connie takes readers of the Midwest Wanderer blog on a tour of quilt gardens, historic and fun places to check out the cuisine and shopping in northern Indiana's Amish Country. We've been to a few of these places in the past, but there are plenty of additional sites for us to see next time we're out that way! Be sure to check out the helpful tips here about driving in the area and respectfully sharing the roads with horse-drawn buggies in the area.
Planning a Legendary North Dakota Road Trip-This is the type of trip Tim and I were in the process of planning several years ago before he got really ill and we had to postpone it. Luckily for us, Francesca and her family are planning their own trip to North Dakota's legendary landscape later this year. We'll be following along as they plan, and take, this trip! We particularly loved visiting the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the state and especially look forward to reading about their adventures there.
A Couples Weekend Getaway to Chicago with Greyhound-Amanda made a quick road trip to Chicago, leaving the driving to Greyhound, finding it a quick, stress-free and affordable alternative. She took in a couple of our Chicago favorites that included the architectural tour on the Chicago River and an interior architectural tour that included one of our favorite buildings in the City, the Chicago Cultural Center!. Read about the rest of her fun in the Windy City at the A Dangerous Business blog.
