Check out some great Midwest-related stories I found online this past month:
The Great Iowa Road Trip-This looks like a great itinerary for a road trip to see some iconic sites like Iowa's State Capitol in Des Moines and the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake near where 50s musical legends Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper died in a tragic plane crash after a show there. Check Kim's story at the Oh My Omaha blog.
Bavarian Inn Lodge and Restaurant: Two Frankenmuth Michigan Icons-Frankenmuth is less than two hours from us, so we've been there multiple times to enjoy family-style chicken dinners, shop at Bronner's Christmas store, admire Frankenmuth's over-sized covered bridge and stop by the Cheese Haus for goodies to take home. We also enjoyed spending time at the Bavarian Inn Lodge as Tonya and her family did! Check out her story at The Traveling Praters blog.
Add Kansas City Library to your Bucket List!-I'm glad to know that we're not the only ones who enjoy visiting great libraries during our travels. Check out Deb's story about the library at Kansas City, Missouri with its biblio-themed architecture and unique historic features dating from its days as a downtown bank. Read the story at the Just Short of Crazy blog.
A Sail on General Patton's Private Yacht When and If at Put-in-Bay-Karyn jumped at the chance to sail aboard a private yacht built for General Patton who used it to fulfill his dream of sailing around the world when he returned from World War II. Check out the story at Kayrn's Sand and Snow blog.
Sailing Aboard the When and If Schooner-Check out Heather's story at Ohio Girl Travels for another look at some great images from her trip on Patton's former yacht at Put-in-Bay, Ohio.
The Grand Haven Lighthouse and Pier from the "Other" Side-Aaron is quite used to seeing the lighthouses at Michigan's Grand Haven from the main pier where they actually sit, but he recently took a walk down another pier primarily catering to fishers to see the lights from a different vantage point. Check out his images and story at The Adventures of elATLboy blog.
Ephemeral city: Drive-in Theater Matchbook-Drive-in movie theaters are a relic of the distant past in many places, although some enterprising souls like the owners of the hockey arena in Plymouth, Michigan started running a drive-in theater in the parking lot there during summers to make a few bucks during the off-season. John shares a bit of memorabilia from some classic movie drive-ins from the Kansas City, Missouri area at the Paris of the Plains blog.
Come Hither! 7 Tips for Visiting Black Rock Medieval Fest-Jessie takes us to this western Michigan Renaissance Festival, which continues running through August 7. Check it out at the Wandering Educators blog.
Recap of Waterford Balloon Fest-Colorful balloons and sunny skies brightened up the day when Mel and her family attended this Wisconsin balloon fest, but things got even more spectacular later in the evening afterglow program when lighted balloons illuminated the night sky. Check out the story and images at A Little Tim and a Keyboard blog.
200 Free Things to do at the Indiana State Fair-Michigan once had one of the longest running state fairs in the country, and the high point of many years when I was younger was an annual trip to the fair in Detroit with a cousin to see the art work and collections she entered in competition. Michigan discontinued its traditional state fair amid financial problems after a little more than 100 years in 2009. I enjoy reading about State Fairs like the one in Indiana that continues to attract visitors every year with a full menu of fun things to see and enjoy. Check out Kyle's story about it at the Indiana Insider blog.
25 Ways to Have Fun at the Illinois State Fair-Great state fairs have plenty of things to do for the whole family, and as Connie says, even spending two entire days at the Illinois State Fair didn't give her a chance to see everything there. Check out her story at the Midwest Wanderer blog.
RNC in CLE-Okay, I admit that I watched way too much coverage of both political conventions on television last month, but I did actually see one convention story online that I enjoyed. Check out Michael's story at OHventures that spotlights Cleveland and how it welcomed delegates (I'm glad to see that Michael apparently scored a spot for people watching during the convention inside of one of celebrity chef Michael Symon's restaurants along Cleveland's E. 4th Street!)
Stroll Through Dave Grohl Alley-This place in Warren, Ohio has been on my bucket list since I first heard about it a while back. Check out this story and some great images about this alley dedicated to musician Grohl from Michael's OHventures blog
Marblehead Lighthouse Marblehead, OH-Marblehead Lighthouse along Lake Erie on a peninsula overlooking the Cedar Point Amusement Park is one of my favorite lighthouses because it is close enough to us that we can easily visit any time of the year. Check out Thaleia's story about her family's summer visit to the lighthouse at the Something 2 Offer blog.
The Wisconsin Dells: A History Told in Sandstone-This story reminded me of a trip I took with my parents when I was little, and I remember seeing one of the dogs trained to jump the gap the between the shore and the Stand Rock formation along the Wisconsin River that Julie spotlights in her story at Wandering Educators.
