Check out some great Midwest-related stories I found online this past month:
Detroit's Historic Woodbridge Neighborhood-Detroit has taken more than its share of lumps, especially recently, but I always enjoy seeing Charlie's reports from some of the city's most intriguing and beautiful neighborhoods. Check out this story with its beautiful pictures of a neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places at the Bikes, Books & A Little Music blog.
Positively Tiffany-Maureen shares some beautiful photos of Tiffany glass pieces from the collection at Chicago's Driehaus Museum in this post at her Positively Tuesday blog. Maureen also mentions Clara Driscoll, the woman who designed many pieces for Tiffany and whose life was the basis for a Susan Vreeland novel, Clara and Mr. Tiffany. We've also been to the Smith Museum of Stained Glass on Chicago's Navy Pier mentioned in this story, which features a permanent exhibit of Tiffany pieces as well.
A Room with a View: Frances Farmer Will Find Her Peace in Fishers-I remember the story of 1930s and 1940s film star Frances Farmer as a sad tale that included an infamous slide from film fame through alcoholism and mental illness to repeated shock treatments, a rumored lobotomy and several years of commitment to a psychiatric hospital. Ryan's story at the Historic Indianapolis blog follows this sad tale beyond the time period covered by the 1982 biopic about Farmer that I remember that starred Jessica Lange and on through to Farmer's final years after won her freedom in the 1950s and married. Farmer finally settled in Indianapolis to host a daytime movie series on local television. Farmer died in 1970, and her grave is near Indianapolis in Fishers, Indiana.
The City Market: So Fresh-MC Calder shares some great photos and the story of Indianapolis' City Market, which looks like a great foodie destination in Indianapolis at the Indiana Insider blog. I love visiting farmers markets when I travel, so this place is definitely going on my Midwest bucket list!
Second Annual Cincideutsch Christkindlmarkt Expands to Findlay Market-We enjoyed attending our first traditional German-style Christkindlmarket about five years ago in Chicago, so it was fun to see Lisa's story about a similar developing tradition in Cincinnati and Findlay, Ohio on the OTR Matters blog.
Journey to Wisconsin's Past at Old World Wisconsin-Mel shares a story about a great interactive opportunity to share some Old World culture and traditions with your family near Eagle, Wisconsin at the Two Moms a Little Time and a Keyboard blog.
Board the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Then Discover the Pleasant Village of Peninsula-We've visited Peninsula and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park several times, but we've yet to do this scenic train ride. It was fun to read about Betsy's trip through the valley on the railroad on her beesfirstappearance blog. Her story also includes a mention of the Everett Road Covered Bridge, which many report to be haunted!
Images from Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center in Delphi, Indiana-Canals have always fascinated me because they played such an important part in this country's western expansion even as they essentially bypassed my own home state of Michigan. Jessica's pictures at the little Indiana blog show a nice local museum with plenty of fun interactive things for kids to do.
You'll Dig the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota-Jody takes readers of the Family Rambling blog to explore the world's largest mammoth research facility in South Dakota. Visitors can see paleontologists at work as they uncover evidence of the mammoths of the area's past, and there are even opportunities to sign up and participate in archaeological digs yourself!
Destination Lafayette: A Weekend Full of Educational Family Fun-Check out The Average Parent blog where Rebeca highlights a number of family-friendly places to visit or catch a bite to eat in this northwestern Indiana city that is also home to Purdue University.
That's it for this month's Midwest travel links list. Do you have any favorite Midwest stories or blogs to share?
