Regular Midwest Guest readers know that I love old county courthouses. The buildings and the things a county chooses to display on their courthouse lawns often tell visitors a lot about the culture and history of a particular place.
We found this to be true when we recently visited the historic courthouse in Lapeer, Michigan, which is in the county just north of my home county of Oakland.
Oakland County's courthouse is sprawling a mid-twentieth-century building that lacks the real sense of history I can see and feel by visiting Lapeer's vintage 1840s court building with its golden dome.
