I'm sure I inherited my love of being on the water from my dad. He loved being out on the water, as do I.
My dad owned a couple of motor boats when I was quite young, and he taught me to drive them. So, I spent many happy hours driving our boats out along the Tittabawasee River in Michigan as a teenager.
My parents had a place in Florida for a number of years. One of the last times I visited them there, they asked me what I wanted to do during my visit.
My reply? I wanted to take a boat ride or two.
That turned into four boat rides over the course of a week that included a sunset cruise, a boat tour through alligator country (where I "wrestled and alligator"-as in I was the person who volunteered for what ended up as me holding a baby alligator while my dad took a photo), an airboat ride through the Everglades and an afternoon where my dad rented a motor boat so we could ride out to an island to collect shells and rocks along the beach.
This particular photo comes from a trip the three of us took to Michigan's Upper Peninsula just before I moved out of my parents' home and into my own home.
My dad always liked to keep moving when we were on the road, but this time my mom and I managed to talk him into staying an extra day in Copper Harbor so we had time to take a sunset cruise on one of the Isle Royale ferry boats. We spent a couple of hours watching the sunset, chasing freighters and relaxing while a fellow cruiser took this photo with my dad's camera.
I lost my father a year ago today.
I love you, Roo, and I miss you.

Sonja & Danielle-
Thanks for your good thoughts. This is one of my favorite photos of the three of us together.
