Jessie Voigts is back, this time with a couple of foodie finds from northwestern Michigan. First up is The Fusion, which also happens to be one of our favorite stops when visiting this area of the state.
Fabulous Asian fusion cuisine-it’s not what you’d expect to find in the sleepy northern Michigan town of Frankfort, but that is what's on the menu at The Fusion.
Frankfort's population expands exponentially in the summer, with people visiting their summer cottages, taking in the Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre’s summer offerings, and tourists flocking to the Big Lake. In downtown Frankfort (all of 2-3 blocks), the streets are lined with ice cream shops, gift boutiques, plenty of places to buy a T-shirt or beautiful handmade jewelry, a wonderful library, and several places to eat.
Head down toward the Lake Michigan (almost to the end of the few downtown blocks), on the bay side, and stop in at The Fusion, a global outpost of great food. It’s got great views of Betsie Bay (snag a window table), clean, minimalist décor, and outstanding food. The first time I went, I was completely surprised. You don’t expect to find international food this good (and authentically flavored) up north in a small town. But Frankfort is deceptive, and there are many hidden spots of foodie goodness in this area (try the smoked fish pate from the Port City Smokehouse, or anything from the L’Chayim Deli down in Beulah) amidst the tourist spots.
At The Fusion, the crab rangoons are amazing, the hot and sour soup scrumptious, and each entrée is a delight. Knowing myself, I always specify No Flames. I just don’t do hot. The cook listens, and makes up my pad Thai just right. There are plenty of other offerings, though – The Fusion refers to the pan-Asian offerings from Japan, Thailand, Korea, and China. If you’re a vegetarian, you’ll find plenty to eat here. If you’re not a vegetarian, well, the same goes for you, too. I’ve been many times, and each time I am amazed at the deliciousness that comes from that kitchen. Service can be slow, and during the summer, be sure to make a reservation – this place gets packed! In the winter, double check the hours before driving in.
