Jessie Voigts checks out yet another great Michigan foodie find. This is another place I've yet to try, but it goes on my list of places to check out when I next visit Chelsea!
Centered in the beautiful downtown block of Chelsea, Michigan, is a gem of a restaurant.
Back to the Roots is relatively new (opened in summer, 2011) and boasts excellent food and unique shopping. An enticing & comfortable seating area greets you when you first walk in – if you make it past this, you’ve got great willpower (or are very hungry).
Wander through the fair trade clothing and accessories (gifts for yourself or others!) and head to the café near the back.
But if you’re like me, the pop machine on the left will distract you on the way back. Really? Mandarin Key Lime? Strawberry Rhubarb? I don’t even LIKE pop, and I LOVE that strawberry rhubarb pop. Anything rhubarb, and I’m in. But I digress…
Back to the Roots features excellent sushi, sandwiches, soups, desserts, and of course coffee and tea. There’s an entire wall devoted to tea and herbs in beautiful jars.
The décor is eclectic – warm colors, salt rock lamps glowing, colored Japanese lanterns hanging from the ceiling, comfortable yet stylish chairs.
The staff is very friendly and well-versed in the menu. The sushi was delicious, while the pulled pork sandwich satisfied with a light taste on toasted challah bread. We were so full that, alas, dessert would have to wait for another visit. And yes, we’ll be back. They serve breakfast, you know…

Great post! I'll definitely stop here if we're ever down in Chelsea. The U.P. could definitely use a few more sushi places in my opinion. Unfortunately aside from Lattitude's in Marquette, we're pretty much sushi-less. :(

Jesse-I actually think I'd trade a bit of sushi for some of the things y'all have in abundance...like waterfalls!
