Welcome!
Travel is an adventure. Exciting stories about exotic locations spark the imagination of armchair travelers, but many potential travelers don’t always appreciate the seemingly more prosaic destinations that may be just around the block from home.
I love going off on an extended vacation, but the necessity of making a bit of money to pay the bills means I’m not always free to take off for weeks at a time.
So, I’ve learned to appreciate the value of a day trip or a quick weekend getaway…even an hour in my backyard hammock with a good book. Getting away from the daily routine for even a little bite-sized bit of time is one of the best ways I know to relax, learn a little something new and develop a new appreciation for the world around you.

I’ll write mostly about my Midwestern meanderings here. If I travel farther afield, you’ll hear about it. If I find a great travel book, Web site or television show, you’ll hear about it. Topics related to my travels like photography, history, food and geocaching will appear here as well.
I’ve had some great advice and encouragement as I’ve gone through the process of starting this blog. A few thank yous are in order here:
Thanks to Debbie Dubrow for the great list of women travel bloggers at Delicious Baby, one of my first stops as I started exploring the world of travel blogging
Thanks to Pam Mandel and travel bloggers at Nerd’s Eye View for all of the advice and encouragement.
And very special thanks to my friend Anne Harris for showing me around TypePad and coming up with a great name and URL for my blog. Anne, winner of a 1999 Spectrum Award and a 2005 Nebula Award finalist for her science fiction work, ventures into a more alternative and edgy genre at Friskbiskit.
The excitement of planning a trip is nothing compared to the voyage itself.
Let’s get started!

Hooray! We're up and running! Looks good so far! Looking forward to reading about places in my own backyard that I don't know about! ;) Cheers!

Great idea! I enjoyed reading through, and look forward to more. I will send the post to a few people and encourage them to log on. the dream cruise info was fun. Katy and Andy came here to escape and neighbors went to dream cruise third year in a row. It is all perspective. Have fun and enjoy finding great adventure in your backyard.

Cool. Love the baseball section. You should come see PNC Park in Pittburgh someday. Great park, crappy team. Can't wait to read about the Whalers. As Jim Morrison should have said, "the midwest is the best".

Yup, there will be hockey mentioned somewhere along the line! I'm thinking Whalers and something on the Great Lakes Invitational college hockey tourney as well.
Thanks for stopping by, guys.
